Climb Mt. Monadnock
Peterborough, NH ( May 19th, 2012 )
Mount Monadnock, located primarily in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, is renowned as one of the most frequently climbed mountains in the world, often cited alongside Japan’s Mount Fuji. Standing at 3,165 feet, it is the most prominent peak in southern New Hampshire, rising nearly 1,000 feet above the surrounding landscape and offering a 360-degree panorama that encompasses all six New England states on a clear day.
The mountain is famous for its "bald" rocky summit, which provides an alpine-like experience despite its relatively modest elevation. This barren peak is actually the result of massive fires set by early 19th-century settlers to drive out wolves; the blazes were so intense they consumed the topsoil, leaving behind the jagged granite ledges and boulder scrambles that hikers navigate today. As a National Natural Landmark, Monadnock has served as a spiritual and literary muse for figures like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, who both famously summit and wrote about its rugged beauty.
